Farmers paid to use less water
10 Jun 2005

Farmers may be paid to draw less water from six groundwater aquifers under the lower Murray, lower Gwydir, lower Macquarie, lower Lachlan, lower Murrumbidgee and upper and lower Namoi rivers. Farmers would get tradeable water entitlements, but their quota will decline over the next 10 years to reach more sustainable levels. Some farmers' quotas will eventually more than halve.
