Pork producers seek end to import permits 20 Jun 2005
The pigmeat lobby, Australian Pork, said it would seek an injunction against the Department of Agriculture if the department fails to revoke all 84 permits for the import of pigmeat. The Federal Court last week overturned one permit in what the pigmeat lobby regards as a test case. Biosecurity Australia had judged certain pigmeat imports to be low risk, as long as the meat was treated in a prescribed manner. But the court ruled the assessment had no scientific basis.
