Hay shortage sends price through $300/tonne 23 Jun 2005
While the season has broken for many farmers, livestock producers fear it may be August before their stock will have enough pasture feed. This means farmers must buy hay, and prices are through the roof. With practically none for sale in South Australia or Western Victoria, some graziers have imported hay from Western Australia at up to $300 a tonne. The early end to the season last October means reduced hay yields and, combined with donations of South East fodder to Eyre Peninsula bushfire victims, hay sheds have emptied rapidly.
