Funding found for Wimmera-Mallee pipeline 24 Jun 2005
The federal and Victorian governments are set to announce a cost-sharing agreement for the Wimmera-Mallee pipeline, a project estimated to cost $501 million. The project will see more than 16,000 kilometres of open channels in Victoria's west replaced with 8,000km of pipeline. When completed, the pressurised pipeline system will supply water to 40 townships in the Wimmera Mallee area, around 10 per cent of Victoria. The pipeline, which is expected to take 10 years to complete, is designed to drastically reduce water loss that now totals around 103,000ml per year. Around 85 per cent of water presently supplied to the channels from the Grampians is lost through seepage and evaporation.
