Fonterra eyes Dairy Farmers 29 Jun 2005
New Zealand dairy cooperative Fonterra is rumoured to be planning an offer to buy some or all of the NSW cooperative Dairy Farmers, though Fonterra may wait until Dairy Farmers completes plant closures and cost cutting announced recently. Fonterra is said to believe there is scope for more rationalisation of processing plants and wants to reduce transport costs. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics estimates there there is two or even three times as much capacity in Australia’s dairy industry than required, which is a legacy of protected, state-based marketing arrangements.
