Chicken farms located too close to wetlands 4 Nov 2005
Chicken farms located near wetlands inhabited by migratory birds are a "perfect" environment for the spread of avian influenza. Several chicken farms have been established next to wetlands harbouring thousands of migratory birds around the Pumicestone Passage, near Brisbane, with waterbirds feeding near chicken sheds in the Toorbul and Donnybrook areas. Best-practice guidelines for the poultry industry published by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation say farms should not be close to wetlands.
