CSIRO shifts research focus
7 Nov 2005

CSIRO said farm groups and parliamentarians were wrong in saying the science research organisation was cutting research resources for agriculture. CSIRO said it would maintain its investment of 25 per cent of its total research budget into plant and animal based agricultural research. The CSIRO will, however, change its focus. The CSIRO will no longer devote resources to what it called incremental agricultural research, which is increasingly being done by companies. The CSIRO will now prioritise research that would “transform the value of their farm produce.” He said this would include research on “on differentiated agricultural products and raw materials directed towards the high end in the value chain.” CSIRO will continue with research into biosecurity and animal vaccines.
