Growth in regional centres confounds the cynics 7 Nov 2005
Contrary to the simplistic view pervading urban Australia that the regions are struggling, many are thriving. Centres such as Broome, Cairns and Hervey Bay are expected to have significant population increases in the next generation as people make the shift from the cities to the regions while continuing to expect city-level services. Golden Plains, north of Geelong, was the fastest-growing Victorian rural shire in the year to June last year, with a growth rate of 3.6 per cent, outstripping Melbourne's growth rate of 1.3 per cent.
