Wool walks a fine line
11 Nov 2005

The production of fine wool – with 19.5 microns and finer – has increased from 10 per cent of all wool production in the 1990s to 30 per cent today. Production of fine grades of wool is up by 130 per cent, even though the overall market is down by 45 per cent. The annual rate of increase of production for fine wools is 11 per cent a year, while the annual rate of increase for ultrafine wools – 16.5 microns and finer – is 34 per cent a year. The price premium for fine wools is about 25 per cent, half the long term average premium over coarser wools, but still motivating wool growers to specialise.
