Downer rejects compensation for Iraq 14 Nov 2005
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer denied that Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Chalabi suspended Australian wheat imports in lieu of compensation for $290 million in AWB kickbacks channelled to Saddam Hussein through Jordanian trucking company Alia. Trade Minister Mark Vaile’s spokesperson said that “compensation was a matter between the wheat board and Iraq” whilst the opposition has called for a royal commission into the deals that saw AWB named as by far the largest source of contributions to Hussein under the UN’s corrupted “Oil for Food” program.
