AWB set to lose Iraq market to US
23 Dec 2005

Australian wheat sales to Iraq, the world’s fourth largest market, are set to cease after more than fifty years of trade, because AWB has apparently baulked at the Iraqi governments’ insistence on taking over responsibility for all shipping. In recent years, AWB has earnt extra revenue by controlling shipping on about half of its exports. Traditionally Iraq pays a premium for Australian wheat which is preferred for its milling quality and flavour, however US sales have climbed since the invasion and now constitute the majority of the four million tonne annual trade.
