Irrigators suspicious about Snowy privatisation
9 Jan 2006

Irrigator group Lakes R Us has failed in its application to the National Competition Council to secure 800,000 Ml for its members over 30 years from the Snowy Mountains water storages. NSW Premier Morris Iemma has let a NCC 60 day deadline on the matter lapse, meaning it is rejected. The NSW government is planning to sell its 58 per cent stake in Snowy Hydro through a share market float. The Federal government is also considering selling its 13 per cent stake, worth about $3 billion. The Victorian government has resisted privatisation amid concerns over the security of environmental and agricultural water allocations.
