Sugar farmers to seek assistance
22 Mar 2006

The federal government faces some tough policy decisions in coming days. Any thoughts of providing aid to sugar cane farmers who's crops were wiped out by Cyclone Larry could sit oddly with the stated aim to encourage farmers to leave the industry. About a quarter of the country's sugar crop was damaged by the storm. There will also be a debate over allowing the import of bananas. Biosecurity Australia said it would not speed up its periodic assessment of the ban on bananas, which may be undertaken mid-year.
