Support payments to be reviewed 3 Jan 2008
The federal government has announced plans to review the system of drought relief payments amid concerns that money is being used to support farmers on land considered unviable. The Primary Industries Minister, Tony Burke, said yesterday that the move was part of a plan by the Rudd government to take more action on climate change than the previous government. Mr Burke said that the exceptional circumstances payment system would remain unchanged until its scheduled review in September, but whether such support should be extended indefinitely would be reconsidered.
