Happy yarn for wool growers
7 Jan 2008

Increasing demand is helping to drive wool prices higher for Australian producers. Spot prices broke through the $10 per kilo mark just before Christmas after increasing around 20 per cent over the last 12 months. The price is also being boosted by smaller flock numbers as many farmers reduced their numbers to cope with the drought. Growers have welcomed the higher prices but, recognising that wool prices are volatile and dependant on a healthy global economy, some are looking for other ways to improve the value of their wool. One way is to breed for a finer fleece and another is produce a high quality fibre from sheep that are not mulesed or treated with chemicals to sell into speciality ethical eco-lines.
