Modified vegies could boost calcium 16 Jan 2008
A genetically modified carrot has been found to increase the absorption of calcium by 41 per cent compared with a normal carrot, potentially helping to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis. Researchers said that, if applied to a range of fruit and vegetables, significant inroads could be made towards preventing osteoporosis. Urine samples were collected from participants the day after eating the modified carrot and after eating a traditional carrot to measure how much of the calcium had been absorbed.
