Queensland: drought one day, floods the next
22 Jan 2008

Heavy flooding in Queensland has meant that dams in many areas are filling rapidly and the state Premier, Anna Bligh, said that the drought status of much of the west of the state will be reviewed shortly. For example, in the St George cotton growing region three of the four dams are already full while the last is at 90 per cent of capacity and filling fast. Ms Bligh cautioned that while much of state was in flood some shires were very large and it should not be assumed that all areas have had the same amount of rain. Farmers have estimated that the floods could cost them $1 billion.
