Wheat marketing reforms will happen this year
29 Jan 2008

The Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has rejected calls to delay implementation of changes to wheat marketing arrangements, instead saying that a draft of new legislation would be available by early March and would take effect from the first of July. Mr Burke said that the new system would have to be competitive right from the start and that CBH in West Australia and ABB and Graincorp in the east would have to allow smaller companies to use their infrastructure. While some have expected Mr Burke to use his export licence approval powers to give an indication of how a future system would work, he said that he will continue to be guided by the current legislation until the new legislation was in place.
