Small crop to drive wine prices higher
30 Jan 2008

Australian consumers face paying more for their wine with a forecast for this year's crop of only 1.22 million tonnes compared with an average of 2 million tonnes. Experts say that hardest hit will be bottles selling for $10 or less, with the national merchandise manager at Dan Murphy's saying that "quite a few" vendors planned increases of between 3 and 8 per cent from 1 February. Wine Grape Growers Australia spokesman Mark McKenzie said that it was a difficult time to be in the industry where after four years of oversupply there was suddenly a shortage and there would have to be some price rises.
