Our hottest January ever 1 Feb 2008
January has been the hottest start to the year on record for all parts of Australia except for eastern Queensland and north-eastern NSW. The average temperature across the whole country was 1.3 degrees higher in January with large areas such as the Pilbara in Western Australia and Central Australia recording averages 3 to 4 degrees higher. According to the head of climate analysis at the Bureau of Meteorology, David Jones, the general pattern is one of warming and temperatures are now 1 degree higher than they were in 1950.
