Wet in the north, but dry in the south 11 Feb 2008
While NSW and Queensland are flooded by heavy rain falls Victoria and South Australia remain in the grip of drought. Sydney has recorded 153 millimetres of rain over the last week, Brisbane had 104mm and Darwin received 100mm, but Melbourne has only had 12mm so far this month and Adelaide has received 9.8mm since the start of this year. The La Nina weather pattern that is favouring the north and east of Australia does not have much of an effect on the south of the country. Forecasters put the chance of higher temperatures and higher rainfall in South Australia over the next few months at around 50 per cent. In Victoria, farmers hoping for floodwaters flowing into the Murray from the north to give them a break will be disappointed with the volumes expected to be insufficient to trigger easing of water restrictions.
