Floods dry up sugar supplies

Sugar cane production looks set to plummet due to the flooding in north Queensland, just as global sugar prices have jumped to an 18-month high. One third of the country's sugar crop is grown around Mackay where some areas have had over a metre of rain in the last eight days. Ian Ballantyne, chief executive at Canegrowers, said that while cane can withstand a certain amount of waterlogging there is a lot that is sitting under water or has been blown down.
