More water boosts grape harvest

Improved water allocations have caused the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation to lift its expectations for the 2008 harvest from 1.22 million tonnes to between 1.55 and 1.65 million tonnes. The increase has been welcomed by the industry but the revised expectations are still well below the average vintage of 1.9 million tonnes. The chief executive at AWBC, Jock Osborne, said that it was likely that there would still be shortages in some areas which would have to be filled by imports. Managing director at Taylors Wines, Mitchell Taylor, said that the biggest challenge facing the industry now was the strength of the Australian dollar which has profit margins are under pressure and contracts with the United States have had to be renegotiated.
