Wudinna gets a visit from the doctor
4 Mar 2008

Located 569 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, the town of Wudinna has just got its first permanent doctor in three years. Scott Lewis is the first Australian born and trained GP to set up a practice in rural South Australia in the last 12 years. Chairman of Wudinna's council, Tim Scholtz, said that Dr Lewis has been very busy with patients since around a fifth of the town's population gave him a welcome party. Dr Lewis said that the reactions of his medico friends ranged from admiration to wondering why anyone would go and work somewhere like that. The rural health workforce is believed to be 16,000 short of health professionals including 1000 doctors.
