Draft wheat marketing rules this week 4 Mar 2008
The federal government is expected to unveil draft legislation for the control of wheat exports later this week which will include "multiple selling points" for Australia's wheat crop. Agriculture Minister Tony Burke said that the new regime would be "for people who believe in a publicly competitive market-place". Liberals leader Brendan Nelson is under increasing pressure from within his party to support the dismantling of the single desk but this would cause friction with the Nationals who still support the marketing of wheat through a single body.
