Apple talks sour 7 Mar 2008
Government talks with New Zealand yesterday aimed at breaking the deadlock over apple imports have failed. New Zealand will now take Australia to the World Trade Organisation to have the dispute settled. New Zealand has been lobbying to gain access to Australia since 1986 and says that conditions imposed on any apple exports make trade almost impossible. A formal complaint has already been lodged with the WTO but the federal government had been hoping that talks could solve the issue bilaterally. Farm leaders are concerned that Australia is likely to lose the apple dispute which would then cast doubt over the credibility of the quarantine system and could have a knock-on effect on other sectors.
