Concessions to Victoria on water plan 10 Mar 2008
The federal government has said that states will retain their control over water rights as a concession to win Victoria's support for the Murray-Darling water management plan. Announced on Friday, the new deal will also see the commonwealth set a cap in total water extraction from the system but then states will be responsible for the annual allocation to irrigators. Victoria has said that the change is a significant step in implementing the $10 billion 10-year plan but there are still significant issues that need to be addressed before it will support the plan.
