Horticulture goes nuts
11 Mar 2008

Nut production is predicted to be the fastest growing agricultural sector, its value increasing from $217 million in 2006 to $1.32 billion in 2020. Most of this increase should be in almonds which are forecast to go from 16,000 tonnes in 2006 to 77,000 tonnes in 2015. The horticulture plan, Future Focus, predicts that while the number of people employed in the horticulture sector will drop from 114,290 people now to 104,160 in 2020, employment in the nut industry will go from 3,288 to 12,038 over the same period.
