More pressure for mulesing action

One of the world's largest wool processors, G. Modiano has said that the government should make pain relief mandatory if surgical mulesing is necessary. Director Laurence Modiano said to avoid further boycotts by European retailers the federal government should take over mulesing negotiations. A campaign is being conducted by the Swedish government to get consumers to boycott Australian wool and this has been supported by 10 large Danish retailers. No alternatives to mulesing have yet been commercialised but the wool industry has pledged that the practice will be ceased by 2010. An anaesthetic spray for mulesed sheep is available.
