Leaders push for Nationals merge
13 Mar 2008

The National Party must merge with the Liberals or face extinction according to three of their elder statesmen. Former leaders Doug Anthony and Ian Sinclair along with Fraser-government minister Peter Nixon have said that if the merger does not proceed the party will "fade out of existence – wither on the vine". In their submission to a review of the party being conducted by former leader John Anderson, the three say that a merger would allow the party to go out holding its head high. Mr Anthony is afraid that if the matter is left longer than a year "the National Party will just fade away".
