A step closer for water plan
26 Mar 2008

While Victorian Premier John Brumby has restated his opposition to any water deal that would disadvantage the state's irrigators, there is hope that the Council of Australian Governments meeting in Adelaide today will see some progress on the federal takeover Murray-Darling river system. Victoria has prevented the implementation of the $10 billion plan, saying that its water management is already the best, while South Australia supports the administration of the system by an independent commission. Ministerial level meetings over the last month have agreed that states will be allowed to retain their powers to set annual water allocations.
