Wheat shipping to Iraq again
29 Apr 2008

Wheat exports to Iraq will recommence today after Glencore won approval to sell 250,000 tonnes to the Iraqi Grain Board which will be delivered in five shipments over the next three months. The value of the deal is unknown but at current prices this amount of wheat would be worth around $100 million. Exports to Iraq ceased following the UN oil-for-food scandal which saw the AWB lose its contract and in which Glencore's Swiss-based parent, Glencore International, was also implicated. Agriculture Minister Tony Burke said that the resumption of sales to Iraq was a bid win and a "chance for Australian growers to get back into what used to be our biggest market".
