La Nina fails to end drought 6 May 2008
Despite the presence of a La Nina system the drought across central Australia and much of the country has actually gotten worse. A statement from the Bureau of Meteorology has partly blamed climate change for the conditions. "The combination of record heat and widespread drought during the past five to 10 years over large parts of southern and eastern Australia is without historical precedent and is, at least partly, a result of climate change," it said. The Bureau is predicting average rainfalls across the southern parts of the country but much more than this is needed to bring an end to the drought.
