Jump in grain production this year 7 May 2008
While there has been little in the way of rainfall across Victoria, the state's grain production is expected to rise. The NAB May farm outlook is predicting that total wheat production in Victoria for 2008-09 will hit 3.1 million tonnes, 69 per cent higher than last year and 46 per cent more than the five year average. However NAB's agribusiness economist Frank Drum said that low subsoil moisture levels and water allocations remain a concern. Across the nation NAB expects the winter crop to come in at 38.8 million tonnes which is 72 per cent higher than last year.
