House brands swallowing milk supply 16 May 2008
National Foods has told the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that 74 per cent of all white milk sold through supermarkets is house brands owned by the supermarket chains. In its submission to the ACCC's inquiry into grocery prices, National Foods said that the house brands had made substantial inroads into the white milk market. But questioning by ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel revealed that this did not apply to all categories of dairy product, with house brands winning only 4 to 5 per cent of the yoghurt market. Michael Harley, National Foods CEO, said that prices for branded milk had been rising faster than for house-brands as the dairy companies supplying milk to Coles and Woolworths had producers locked into long term contracts, while National had increased its farm-gate prices paid to farmers.
