Vanishing olive mystery
21 May 2008

Growers have described the theft of olives from five properties in NSW's Hunter Valley as baffling. The thieves made off with 7.5 tonnes of the fruit worth around $10,000 but have left no evidence of how they did it. Quentin von Essen found that all but two of his 400 trees had been stripped bare of olives during one night earlier this month. "It's perfect. Not an olive on the ground. Not an olive on the tree. Gone. Even the best pickers leave olives for goodness sake." Others have said that if it was people they would love to employ them as it usually takes two people about 40 minutes to pick one tree. Birds and bats have been ruled out as they would leave droppings and would not pick the trees completely clean or leave two untouched.
