Water plan not enough for river's thirst
22 May 2008

Research conducted for the Council of Australian Governments says that Labor's goal of restoring 1500 gigalitres to the Murray River system over the next decade will not be enough to compensate for water lost to unlicensed activities. Over the next 20 years 3400 gigalitres of water are expected to be drained from the Murray-Darling Basin to farm dams, bores and plantation forestry that do not currently require water access entitlements. University of Adelaide's professor of water economics and management Mike Young says that the planned $3.1 billion in water buybacks may only return just over 1000 gigalitres of water to the river.
