Government savings based on hope of rain
27 May 2008

Farmers are bearing the brunt of cuts made to the federal budget by the Rudd government. A Senate estimates hearing has been told that $1.035 billion has been slashed from Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's annual funding. The move reverses all of the additional funding pumped into the department in the last year of the Howard government to support drought affected farmers and deal with the outbreak of equine influenza. The largest saving is from the amount allocated for exceptional circumstances and drought relief payments which has been cut by $500 million.
