Government backflip on community funds
29 May 2008

The Rudd government has reversed its plans to scrap 86 community projects which would have saved $236 million over five years. The regional partnership projects are amongst 115 that had been agreed to before the election but had not yet signed contracts for their funding. At the time of the election Labor had promised to review the outstanding contracts but in the budget said only existing contracts would be honoured. Yesterday Regional Development Minister Anthony Albanese said on television that organisations would now have until 31 July to finalise negotiations and these would be added to the 420 contracts that are being honoured already.
