Crop forecasts down 18 Jun 2008
ABARE's total Australian winter crop forecast is 37 million tonnes, 65 per cent up on last year's harvest but down from forecasts in March. The wheat crop is expected to come in at 23.7 million tones, down 9 per cent on predictions in March, due to a dry autumn in the eastern states. ABARE said summer grain sorghum delivered a record 2.7 million tones this year while rice and cotton had been affected by irrigation water shortages in the Murray Darling basin. Rice production fell 88 per cent while the area planted to cotton was the lowest in 25 years.
