Pacific workers bring hope to their communities 23 Jun 2008
The New Zealand seasonal worker program has built hope in Pacific Island communities says the World Bank. Australian horticulturalists are struggling to find workers to pick their produce. A seasonal picker can take home as much as AUD$5000, many times the yearly average wage in many island countries. The Australian Workers Union supports importing labour from the Pacific if workers are paid Australian awards. A decision is expected by the federal government within weeks on whether to allow such as scheme in Australia.
