Growers bet the farm on winter crop
2 Jul 2008

Moderate rains in eastern wheat belt in June, though below average in many places, were enough to encourage farmers to expand the area devoted to crops. Farmers are gambling on a reasonable yield to take advantage of the doubling in world grain prices. Much of the extra planting is the NSW western wheat belt, even though more than 60 per cent of this region remains drought declared. Vendors of rural supplies say demand is well up in recent weeks.
