Cows must be included in emissions trading scheme 7 Jul 2008
The National Farmers Federation, the Australian Farm Institute, NSW Farmers and Agforce in Queensland have all expressed concerns about the possibility of agriculture being included in an emissions trading scheme. The Garnaut report, released on Friday, says a broad based trading scheme should include agriculture but acknowledges the difficulties in measuring gas emissions from farms. Economic modeling in New Zealand shows farm profitability could fall to zero if agriculture is included in the proposed emissions trading scheme. The department of climate change says agriculture accounts for 90 billion tones *or* 15 per cent of all greenhouse emissions. Two thirds of that come from digestive processes of sheep and cattle.
