Wheat trade investigation leads to arrests
11 Jul 2008

Two arrests have been made and more are expected to follow as the Indian police continue their investigation into corruption in the Australia/India wheat trade. Indian police yesterday arrested the former chairman of the India''s state trading corporation and a middle man. The investigation was reopened when the Rudd government was elected after the previous Howard government had resisted Indian requests to refer allegations to the police. $2.5 million worth of commissions were allegedly paid by AWB to accounts in the Cayman Islands for a very high priced wheat shipment of two million tones to India in 1998. At the time the AWB was a statutory government owned authority.
