River crisis drives climate change policy
15 Jul 2008

There could be 40 per cent less water in the Murray Darling Basin by 2030 according to the CSIRO. Under the worst case scenario outlined by the CSIRO, the Murray would have 69 per cent water than at present. The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the estimates underline the need for action on climate change. "Doing nothing is not an option" said Mr Rudd. 61 per cent of the river''s flow is extracted and the river stops flowing at the mouth 40 per cent of the time.
