Feedlot numbers rise on lower margins
18 Jul 2008

The number of cattle on feed increased 13 per cent over the June quarter. Feedlots were operating at 60 per cent, up from 51 per cent three months earlier but down from capacity usage of 77 per cent a year before. The Australian Lot Feeders'' Association said a soaring Australian dollar and higher feed barley and heavy feeder steer prices have ensured that feedlot margins remained low. The price of feed wheat, barley and sorghum increased 49 per cent, 18 per cent and 27 per cent over the prior year.
