Farmers sell carbon rights 21 Aug 2008
Not-for-profit groups offering to plant trees on farmer''s land as part of community carbon offset campaigns could be offering very one sided deals that leave farmers with very little in return for selling off carbon offset rights and even land rights. Farmers need to approach the deals with caution because many offer to plant trees on farmers'' land for free in return for ownership of the carbon stored in trees, which must remain on the site for at least 70 years once established. The complexity of carbon offset contracts had increased in the past 12 months, with most requiring the site to be registered on a farmer''s property title.
