Hay in demand 21 Aug 2008
The export market demand for Australian hay will increase by more 50 to 100 per cent over the next ten years. An extra 365,000 hectares will need to be planted to meet the projected increase in demand to 1.5 billion tonnes says the NSW DPI. 600,000 extra tonnes will be needed by dairy cows in NSW and Victoria if they increase their intake by 1.5 tonnes per year each. Almost 90 per cent of hay exports got to Japan, South Korea imports 6 per cent, Taiwan 4 per cent and the Middle East 1 per cent.
