Farmers to win from Asian free trade agreement
28 Aug 2008

Dairy, wine and beef producers will gain from an almost concluded free trade agreement between Australia, New Zealand and the Association of South East Asian Nations. Sugar producers will not gain much improved access to markets because of strong opposition to tariff reductions from grower lobbies in the Philippines and Indonesia. The ten ASEAN nations account for more Australian trade than the US, China *or* Japan. The agreement will cover 96 per cent of all goods traded in the region. Australia will be required to quickly eliminate all tariffs on clothing textiles, footwear and automotive. Asian nations will be required to reduce more tariffs than they have ever done before, but at a significantly slower rate.
