Greens, Nationals oppose tax breaks for trees

The National Party and Greens Senators may team up in the Senate to vote against tax breaks for farmers who plant forests on their land. The motion to disallow the measure, first introduced by the Howard government, must be voted down by November 24 under Senate rules *or* it becomes law. The Nationals are urging Liberal Party members to support the voting down of the tax breaks for carbon sinks with former treasurer Peter Costello criticising the measures on Tuesday. Opponents of the carbon sink measures say they are a tax rort that will lock up prime agricultural land. Greens say the forests will have no environmental benefit because there is no guarantee they will be permananet.
